5 Franchises I've Never Played

I’m pretty sure I’ve said before that I’ve been a gamer for a few years. If I haven’t…well then there you go. I’ve also said in a previous ‘Top 5’ that as a kid there were many games that I didn’t bother beating. Mega Man Legends, for example. And almost on cue, Mega Man Legends 3 was announced.

Now I’m going to talk about something that may very well get me yelled at by many people (well it would if we had anyone following us)…actually, you’ve already read the title if you’re reading this, so I guess I’ll stop stalling and get on with it.

Resident Evil

WAIT WHAT?!

Yes I have never played a Resident Evil game! I’m sorry. I know RE4 was awesome and I think people have said it’s the best one, but I haven’t played it. Well, unless you want to count the 20 minutes of RE5 that I played. Then again, maybe you don’t want to because I was playing it solo and that game is made for Co-Op. (To be enjoyable anyway)

Excuse(s)?

I was a kid when Resident Evil was out on the Playstation 1 and I got scared easily back then, so I avoided it. I watched my dad play RE2 one day when I was at his house and later on that night I had a tiny nightmare about it.

And now…?

Now I guess I have no excuse. I still have a PS2 and RE4 was ported to it in ’05. Plus it’s probably super cheap now, never mind the prices for the original Playstation games.

Man, that was only number 5 and I’ve already shot myself in the foot. You must be thinking: “If this is the fifth one, what else hasn’t he played? Tetris?”
Well I’ve played Tetris (and can’t stand it, personally) but the next one won’t be all that bad…

Jak and Daxter (…okay, that was a lie)

WAIT WHAT!?

“You mean one of the best exclusives for the Playstation 2 you never played? What in the f—k did you play? Monopoly?!”

You mean that? Yeah I had it. It was a Christmas gift.

Excuse(s)?

Jak and Daxter was from Naughty Dog right? They made Crash Bandicoot, holy Crap! ….Wait, I didn’t finish Crash Bandicoot.
I think there’s a message in that somewhere.

Hey! Give me some credit. I did give serious thought to renting Jak and Daxter back when I used Gamefly. I was really looking forward to playing it since I had skipped it, but Gamefly never sent it and that account ended up being cancelled.

And now…?

I’m over Jak and Daxter. It’s been a while since Jak 3 hasn’t it? In fact, even Naughty Dog has moved on from Jak and Daxter, they went on to Make Uncharted and Uncharted 2: Amount Thieves. Those are what I really want to play from them. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Playstation 3.

God of War

WAIT WHAT?!

“Kratos himself should show up on your doorstep and rip your fingers off.”

Probably, but then I’d never be able to play any of the God Of War games, and I really want to.

Excuse(s)?

I remember when the first God of War came out. I ended up comparing the game play style to Kingdom Hearts (how I’m not sure, I was still on a Kingdom Hearts high three years later) but I still told myself that it looked pretty cool and I should give it a shot. But I was 13/14 and I’m pretty sure even GOW1 was rated M, so that was a no go.

And now…?

God of War 3 made me want a PS3. I didn’t care that I hadn’t played the previous 2, but then they announced the God of War Collection, meaning that if you had a PS3 and had never played the first two, then you had no excuse, but I still don’t have a PS3. Sorry if you thought I would somehow spawn one after talking about Jak and Daxter just moments ago.
Although it would’ve been awesome if I had.

Ratchet and Clank

WAIT WHAT?

When I first saw Ratchet, I could not figure out what the hell he was, now I know that he’s a Lombax (a what now?)

Excuse(s)?

Anyway, I wasn’t into platformers, I’m still not all that into them, but I’ll play one if it’s something I really want to play. I can handle platformers if they’re only one part of the game play, but to the best of my knowledge, isn’t Ratchet and Clank mostly a platformer? By all means, correct me if I’m wrong.

For the record, I wanted to play Deadlocked.

And now…?

I can do without it, I mean I have so far, right? I have nothing against the series but they just aren’t my thing, I do think I should play it though, I look forward to it. Hell, it might even get me into the genre.
I did like Limbo after all.

Ico/Shadow of the Colossus

WAIT WHAT?

I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I know I should probably have no right to play anymore games, ever, until I play these. Even more so with The Last Guardian coming out in the future.

Excuse(s)?

When it came to Ico, I could not see what the big deal about it was. You were a kid with a stick, leading around some woman by the hand, fighting off these shadow beings. It looked like a long escort mission with some puzzle solving.

Now with Shadow of the Colossus, it looked great, and the bosses were something that I had never seen before. They were freaking huge!!  Then I started hearing things about how the game was extremely difficult, and how the bosses can take a good amount of time to find and even beat.

That turned me off to the game.

I have no problem with difficulty, if I can work my way up to the highest difficulty, I’ll probably play it, but back then Shadow of the Colossus sounded like it started out hard and only got harder. I wasn’t even a ‘Hardcore’ gamer back then either, so I felt that I wasn’t good enough to try it.

And now…?

Shadow of the Colossus is almost universally considered a great game and one that every gamer has to play (Which, I think, is something Morgan Webb has said).

I want to see if Shadow of the Colossus is as hard as my younger self imagined it to be. Plus, I think I have to play it to keep me right to play video games.

--------------------------------------------------------

You know what I’ve noticed? With the exception of Jak and Daxter and Resident Evil, everything else has a good game in its franchise on the Playstation 3 (Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are getting HD re-releases).

It’s kinda weird that I don’t have a PS3 but I have an Xbox 360. I say that because I had a PS1 and a PS2, but I never bothered with the original Xbox. It’s like I changed teams or something.

Well, then again, the PS3 starting at $600 didn’t exactly help.
